Starting the Chinese New Year season with a meaningful gesture can make a big difference, especially for students far from their families. Last December, a simple conversation at a Christmas market led to a special opportunity to bless students at an international school during their Chinese New Year celebrations. This story shows how small acts of kindness can plant seeds of hope and faith in young hearts, even when they are miles away from home.

A Chance Encounter at the Christmas Market
During the busy holiday season, a teacher stopped by our booth looking for a Life of Jesus poster to display in their student activity centre. She shared that she worked at an international school with many Chinese students. Every Chinese New Year, the school blesses their students with an ang pao and a blessing to celebrate the season and offer encouragement.
As she spoke, I felt a quiet nudge to offer something more meaningful than just a traditional ang pao. We decided to bless the students with our "Finding Jesus" ang paos, which include Christian messages and designs that invite children to discover Jesus in a gentle, engaging way.
When she mentioned the blessing was for the whole school, we didn’t hesitate to say yes. It felt like a small but important way to support students who might be feeling lonely or homesick during this festive time.
Why This Blessing Matters
Many students at international schools are overseas, away from their families and familiar traditions. Having studied abroad myself, I understand how Chinese New Year can feel especially isolating when everyone else is with their loved ones. The "Finding Jesus" ang paos offer more than just a red envelope with money—they carry a message of hope, faith, and belonging.
These ang paos encourage children to look for Jesus in the designs, sparking curiosity and planting seeds of faith. It’s a gentle way to share the story of Jesus while respecting the cultural significance of Chinese New Year.
How the School Celebrates Chinese New Year
The school’s tradition of giving ang paos and blessings is a way to honour Chinese culture and support students emotionally and spiritually. By including the "Finding Jesus" ang paos, the school added a new layer of meaning to their celebrations.
Teachers and staff shared how the students eagerly looked for Jesus in the designs, making the experience interactive and memorable. This simple act of giving became a moment of connection and encouragement for the children.
The Impact of Small Blessings
Small gestures can have a big impact, especially when they come from a place of genuine care. The "Finding Jesus" ang paos became a source of comfort and joy for students who might otherwise feel disconnected during the holiday.
Seeing children engage with the designs and hearing stories of how the ang paos touched their hearts reminds us that blessings often come in unexpected ways. These moments build community and faith, even across cultures and distances.
How You Can Share Blessings This Season
If you want to bless loved ones or students during Chinese New Year, consider giving ang paos that carry meaningful messages. Here are some ideas:
Choose ang paos with positive, faith-based designs that invite reflection and hope.
Include a personal note or blessing to make the gift more special.
Share stories or activities that help children understand the meaning behind the designs.
By sharing blessings thoughtfully, you can help others feel seen, loved, and encouraged.
Continuing the Tradition of Blessing Others
This experience with St Francis Methodist School International showed how unplanned conversations can lead to meaningful partnerships. We are grateful to be part of their Chinese New Year celebrations and to support students in a way that honors both their culture and faith.
As you share "Finding Jesus" ang paos with your family and community, remember that these small acts can plant seeds that grow in ways you might never see. Blessings multiply when they come from the heart.
May this Chinese New Year bring hope, joy, and connection to all who receive these special gifts.
